This post will provide step-by-step instructions on how to replace bathroom fan and install a new one.

How To Replace Bathroom Fan And Install A New One

This procedure will make it easier for you if you only need to replace the exhaust fan for a single bathroom. Because with this method you do not have to cut any holes in your ceiling. Let’s take a look at how to replace bathroom fan.

1. Turn off the electrical power in the bathroom on the circuit breaker

The fan is either battery-powered or connected to any electricity. So if you stop it first, it will prevent you from getting any bad shock.

2. Get down the grill to unplug and disconnect

Follow the points:

  • There will probably be plenty of debris, so put on protective goggles, gloves, and a respirator. Then gently remove the grill covering from the old fan.
  • Unplug or unscrew the motor blower assembly from the housing unit, then open the electrical splice unit and pull the wires carefully.
  • Remove the connectors and untwist the wires to disconnect them. (Make sure the power is off first)
To do this, loosen the wire clamp to free the electrical wire from the fan housing.

3. Separate the housing unit in the attic

  • In the attic, disconnect the drain pipe from both the vent cap housing unit and the connecting duct.
  • Pull the wire-free and electrical wire from the housing unit.

Then when the above work is done you now use a powered grill drill to remove the screws attached to the bracket joints to fill the fan. Remove the old fan from the ceiling.

4. Install new replacement fan

If you see that your new fan is the same size as your old one, you can install it now. But if you notice that it has become too big and does not match the ceiling in any way, you can cut a hole with a saw if you want. Again if you see that it is smaller than the ceiling then you have to swallow the edges of the housing unit to fill the gaps to install the fan.

Then go to the attic and put the new fan in the hole.
Now slide the extended mounting brackets to secure them to the joists using your 1 inch (2.5 cm) drywall screw and power drill. When doing this it is best if your fan is held by someone from below.

Once the fan is in place, then attach the 90-degree duct elbow to the fan’s exhaust port using sheet metal screws. And attach a new 4- to 6-inch (10.2 to 15.2 cm) drain pipe to the drain elbow.

6. Connection and cable secured

  • Secure the electrical cable with any wire clamp through the new fan connector.
  • Open the electrical splice box (from the bathroom or attic, depending on the model) then pull the fan wires.
  • Connect the electrical wires to the wires of the fan by connecting the wires of the same color.
  • Wrap the empty copper wire under the ground screw or clip (tighten to secure).
  • Finally take all the wires back to the electrical splice box then replace the cover.

7. Plug in the fan grill and reconnect

Go back to the bathroom and see if the motor blower assembly is installed by plugging it into the reception and securing it. Then connect the grill and turn on the power again to test your new fan.

Congratulations – you have now replaced a new bathroom fan. Now your new fan will keep your bathroom clean and dry even if it protects it from mold and germs.
